Sorry, but I wonât be able to go to the movies today. Something came up.
I rub my temples. He canât be serious.
What happened?
Your Mom needs help with something, but Iâll make it up to you.
âWhatâs wrong?â Caleb asks.
I shake my head and refuse to make eye contact. âHeâs not coming.â
âWhy not?â
I bite my cheek, hoping the sting will distract my tears from wanting to plow down my face. Then, I start shoving my things into my backpack.
Sadie comes back to our table. âSorry about that.â She pauses, eyes following my erratic movements. âWhat happened?â
I slide off the bench and brush past her.
Caleb jumps up, following close behind. âItâs her dad,â he whispers to Sadie as he passes her.
Barreling through the door, I march straight up to Calebâs car.
His hand lands on my shoulder, slowing me down. âTell me whatâs wrong. Please.â
I practically shove his hand away. âDonât touch me.â
He takes a step back, holding his hands up in surrender. âOkay, I wonât, but please talk to me.â
I take in a ragged breath. Dad was my lifeline at home, but heâs deserted me. Heâs making it very clear that everything else is more important than me. âNo. Just drive me home.â
âHolding all this in isnât good for you,â he says.
I scoff. âWhat do you know? You spend all this time doting on me, and for what? You say you want to help me, but why? Who made that your job?â He opens his mouth like heâs about to say something, but I cut him off. âI donât need you to fix me. All I need you to do is drive me to school. Thatâs the only reason Iâm doing these ridiculous dates in the first place.â
All I want is to graduate and leave my rotten life behind.
Caleb trudges toward the driverâs door. âFine. If thatâs really what you want.â
I scramble inside the car as he opens the glove compartment and pulls out our contract. In one swift move, he rips it in two, letting the pieces fall in front of me. âI know you werenât interested in me, but I really thought we could be friends.â His gaze falters. âIâm done being treated like garbage. Iâll drive you back home, but . . . this is the last time.â
My jaw drops. âWhat do you mean this is the last time? How am I supposed to get to school?â
He shrugs as he starts to drive away. âIâm sure youâll find another way. Download an app; pay a driver. At least that way you donât have to go on any more ridiculous dates.â
My head sways. I feel like Iâm lost at sea, and I tug at my sleeves to keep myself grounded. My chest becomes tight, and I have to focus on my breathing to keep it steady. âThatâs not fair.â
He laughs, but it isnât his normal laugh. Itâs cold and devoid of amusement. âNot fair? You donât want to keep up your end of the deal, so why should I?â
The drumming of my heart pounds in my ears, and shivers ripple up my hands.
